Tooth root resection, (= root- amputation)
The treatment means that the root or its parts - beyond keeping the tooth - are removed.Such teeth have to have filled roots.
In what cases is such a treatment needed?
1. Disappearance of the cyst like deformation around the root of the dead tooth can not be expected. In such cases the root has to be removed after filling it.
2. The root channels of the tooth (or only one channel) is not penetrable fully. All those parts of the root shall be removed which can not be filled.
3. Chronic, inflammation around the tooth root (granuloma), if those are not showing recovery tendency.
4. In case of focal infections the filled roots can be considered as centre, even if the inflammation cannot be seen around the teeth.
5. If the filling material is pressed through the root tip (so it is in the bone tissue).
6. If the root channel necessary for the root filling can not be dried out.
7. If pseudo channels were formed during the root treatment and filling, id est the equipments went to a wrong direction.
8. If filling material is stuck or the equipment is broken into the tooth root.
Process of root resection
After filling the root (which can be done prior to the resection or during the operation, it always depends on the actual case), in local anesthesia a small cut is made and with the help of a drill or chisel the root (or at least 3 mm from that) is removed. Then the wound is closed and stitching is removed in a week.
In special cases so called retrograd root filling is needed (filling is made not from the top but the roots are filled from the bottom). This shall be made at the time of the operation.
The tooth root resection is an operation it is carried out by dental surgeons.
